About this place
At the nostalgic-feeling SASEBO Cafe, many people come for the Sasebo sandwich, a much-loved soul food of Sasebo in Nagasaki. Its signature is a homemade mayonnaise-based sauce with a gentle sweetness. Light enough to disappear almost like dessert, the sandwich still leaves a satisfying impression by the last bite. Some enjoy it in the cafe, while others take one away to eat later.
For a heartier meal with rice, the lemon steak—another house specialty—is a satisfying choice. Beef cooks on a hot plate with a bright hit of lemon, making for an appetising combination. The suggested way to finish is to mix the remaining sauce with rice. Lunch also brings homely, familiar dishes: a daily set meal with several small side dishes, Minatomachi beef tendon curry, whose history traces back to a dish cherished in this shipbuilding town, and a horse mackerel fry set meal.
After lunch, or during a tea break, hot coffee poured carefully into a Noritake cup adds a quiet moment of its own. The atmosphere is calm and unpretentious, making it an easy place to settle in alone for a midday pause.
